Enigma : The Int'l Arab Magazine

Yasmine Shihata was born in Kuwait and raised in both Vienna and Washington D.C. She is the daughter of one of Egypt’s most respected individuals, Dr. Ibrahim F.I. Shihata, who was the former Senior Vice President and General Council of The World Bank in Washington D.C. When Yasmine and her family were in Vienna her father was the founder and president of the Opec Fund, giving Yasmine the opportunity to meet important individuals from an early age.

After graduating with an international Baccalaureate from the Washington International School, Yasmine went on to graduate from the London School of Economics in London, with a BSC in International Relations. Yasmine graduated with honours and a keen interest in international affairs. As her mother worked in the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C, current affairs have always had a large prominence in her family.

Yet Yasmine’s passion from an early age has been for fashion, art and magazines. Her years at the LSE help fine-tune her writing skills, yet Yasmine still yearned to get into the magazine business. Thus upon graduation she applied and was accepted into a work experience program at Vogue Magazine in London. Yasmine completed the program then did an internship at Marie Claire magazine in London, assisting in the fashion Department. After her internship Yasmine also assisted a freelance stylist who worked for magazines such as Q, Sky, and The Face magazine in London.

After these experiences in London, Yasmine decided to move to New York City, where she worked for Vogue magazine as senior assistant to the Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour. This demanding position exposed Yasmine to the corporate magazine world and the intricacies of magazine production and public relations. Yasmine went on to use her experiences at Vogue, when she returned to Egypt in 1997, in order to create her own magazine. At the time the market for modern lifestyle magazines in Egypt was still virgin, and Yasmine capitalized on this by forming Allied Publications with a partner, and producing Cleo magazine.

Cleo magazine was a runaway hit from its inception, as it clearly tapped into the desires and values of Egypt’s emerging sophisticated and modern culture. Its focus was the modern Egyptian woman and all the issues that concerned her. The magazine received considerable press and T.V. coverage in its initial year, and is considered as a pioneer in Egypt’s English language lifestyle magazine market. Although Yasmine sold her shares in 1999 to her partner, the foundations she structured in Cleo continue to make it one of the leading English language magazines in Egypt.

Immediately after selling her shares in Cleo, Yasmine formed a new partnership with three of Egypt’s most prominent businessmen. With new and strong backing, Yasmine was able to create an even more creative, dynamic, innovate, modern magazine for Egypt’s young generation. The magazine’s motto was “the magazine for the new millennium” and was first published in January 2000. Its chosen name was Enigma, and it created even more hype and speculation than its predecessor Cleo did. Yasmine’s main challenge at this point was to compete with her former magazine Cleo, and differentiate Enigma as a magazine for both men and women with an international outlook.

Today Enigma has proven to be an even bigger success than
Cleo magazine, breaking even in year one with a substantial profit in year two. Year three, four and five have seen Enigma continue to make a profit, and surpass the sales of its competitors, including Cleo. In its third year Enigma also expanded its distribution to Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain and Oman as well as making a significant impact with its London Distribution. The response Enigma had in London was so positive that in October 2001, Yasmine established the UK company Venus Publications to provide editorial, distribution and advertising sales for Enigma magazine.

Today both Supreme and Venus publications are flourishing due to Yasmine’s dedicated efforts and her genuine love and understanding for what she does. Her extensive experience in creating three start-up companies from scratch has provided her with invaluable experience of magazine and business development at a young age. She is one of the few young Arab women in the Middle East who is running her own businesses in London and Egypt, and has made a considerable name for herself in the industry.

No fragrance or underwear deal announcement for our other popular soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo ! Let's start with some pictures taken yesterday during a press conference prior to the the 17th Fifa World Player Gala in Zurich Switzerland.
Unfortunately those beautiful and strong legs showed during the English Premier League soccer match on saturday were not enough to win the tittle of "Player of the Year". Kaka, 25 years old from Brazil has won the tittle.
Is it me or I see a tiny little bit of jealousy in Cristiano's eyes towards Kaka !!?

Diyafa 2008

The 3rd Hotel, Restaurant and Food Exhibition
for Qatar

Traveling to Qatar is no longer restricted to business –
tourism has become an attraction

The Qatari government is actively encouraging diversification by creating an economy based on non-reliance on oil and gas. This diversification is creating vast opportunities in the hospitality sector and is stimulating construction of luxurious, up-market hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities. The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is actively working towards establishing Qatar as one of the world’s quality destinations for leisure, business, education and sport. With events such as the G77 + China Conference in June 2006 and Doha Asian Games scheduled in December 2006, Qatar’s position is elevated in the global arena. Qatar’s $15 billion master plan focuses on the creation of new hotels and tourist attractions, and it is designed to develop a tourism base that will double the number of tourists from 700,000 to 1.4 million by 2010.

Diyafa 2008 offers unique opportunity for hospitality and food suppliers

In 2006, Qatar witnessed for the first time, a hospitality exhibition that coincided with the country’s construction and touristic rise. The third edition of Diyafa in 2008 is expected to attract more international exhibitors from many international countries as multi-billion USD opportunities are waiting to be grasped, and will provide a unique opportunity for hospitality suppliers to meet prominent Gulf businessmen and decision makers from the Gulf and the Middle East

Reinventing Qatar as a premier tourist destination
Between 2005 and 2008, Qatar is aiming to construct more than 37 hotels that include the most renowned hotel chains, as well as other touristic initiatives such as the Pearl Island – a $2.5 billion man-made residential and leisure complex located off the Doha shoreline. The continuous growth in tourists led to a construction project for a new airport in Qatar. The construction work on the $5.5 billion New Doha International Airport began in January 2005 and is scheduled for completion in three phases beginning in 2009. The new airport will initially be able to handle 12 million passengers a year, rising to 50 million once fully developed in 2015. This will clearly position Qatar as a global hub and a world-class aviation centre linking the East to the West.

Salon Culinaire at Diyafa 2008

For the third time in Qatar, professionals and connaisseurs in the food art industry will have the opportunity to compete and show their savoir- faire and experience in the culinary world. The Diyafa ‘Salon Culinaire’ will be a unique opportunity for hospitality, food suppliers, catering companies to meet, witness and enjoy this event.
The Salon Culinaire will feature a spectacular display and outstanding competitions such as ice, fruit & vegetables and chocolate carvings, artistic pastry competitions, mezzeh and many more. The Salon Culinaire will be judged by a panel of international and renowned chefs.

Shots Fired Near Brad & Angelina’s Home

Don’t worry, they’re safe!

According to Life & Style, gunshots rang out shortly after 4 a.m. on Nov. 27 — just 25 feet from where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie live with their four children in Los Feliz, Calif.

The gunman fired two shots, striking a Range Rover owned by a local resident and hitting the driver’s side window of a camper van used by Brad and Angie’s security team. “It was crazy,” neighbor John Martinez said. “If anybody had been in the car, he or she could’ve been killed.”

On Nov. 29, one of the couple’s bodyguards — a man who identified himself only as Brett and often sleeps in the van struck by a bullet — looked stunned as he inspected the damage. “I’m doing fine, but I don’t want to talk about this,” he said.

And while police declined to comment, officers arrived on the scene minutes after the shooting, neighbors say. In the days after the incident, several unmarked police cars could be seen patrolling the perimeter of the sprawling Pitt-Jolie compound, while two blacked-out SUVs were posted at the main gate.

“The atmosphere has changed all of a sudden,” says one local resident. But Brad’s rep says Brad and his family weren’t the targets of the shots. However, the resident adds, “You can tell their security guys are on high alert right now.”

HTC - touch screen - NEW

HTC announced the global launch of the HTC Touch, a deceptively small and stylish mobile phone that ushers in an innovative new concept in intuitive touch screen navigation.

The HTC Touch offers a new and unique way of controlling touch screen-based devices by recognising and responding to the sweep of a finger across the screen. It is even intelligent enough to distinguish between finger and stylus input and then respond accordingly. The new HTC-designed homescreen provides one-touch access to emails, text messages, calendar appointments and contacts, as well as current weather conditions and forecasts for hundreds of cities around the world.

The HTC Touch is the first device to feature TouchFLO, the new underlying touch screen technology developed by HTC. Consumers simply sweep their finger up the display to launch an animated, three-dimensional interface comprising three screens: Contacts, Media and Applications. The interface can be spun by swiping a finger right or left across the display, providing efficient access to the features consumers use most. TouchFLO also enhances finger touch scrolling and browsing of Web pages, documents, messages and contact lists.

Leveraging the broad functionality of Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the HTC Touch includes Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile, Windows Live and the capabilities to run thousands of third-party applications. Users can surf the web with Internet Explorer, send and receive emails, chat on Messenger and send files to their own web space through Windows Live. Other HTC Touch details include:

  • Dimensions: 99.9mm (L) x 58mm (W) x 13.9mm (T)
  • Weight: 112g with battery
  • 1GB microSD storage card included / 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM
  • 2.8" LCD touch screen with backlight, 240 x 320 dots resolution with 65,536 colours
  • Battery Life: Rechargeable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1100 mAh
  • Standby time: Up to 200 / Talk time: Up to 5 hours
  • Camera: 2.0 mega-pixel CMOS colour camera
  • Windows Mobile 6 Professional
  • Wireless Connectivity: GSM/GPRS/EDGE Tri-band: 900, 1800,1900, Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth® 2.0
  • Choice of two colors at launch - elegant soft black or alluring wasabi green

The HTC Touch is now available in the United Kingdom and will be released later this month in Asia and throughout Europe. The North and Latin American version of the HTC Touch will be available in the second half of 2007.

MSI Does Classy Girl's Laptop

Hey girls, how would you like some technology for you that isn’t pink?

There’s this idea among many manufacturers that if they make something pink it will attract consumers from the fairer sex likes bees to nectar. Truth be told, many tech-oriented girls are no longer six years old and would like something a little more mature. Take MSI’s new notebook, shown off the recent Computex Show in Taipei.

There’s no doubt who the target audience is but it’s artistic and classy without once resorting to stereotyping. The glossy piano-black inside would be perfectly at home in any bloke’s gadget collection.

On the specs front, you are looking at an Intel Centrino Duo engine, 1.3MP Webcam, 17in screen, nVidia Geforce 8600M GT 512MB graphics, DirectX 10 support, HDMI output, surround sound and optional TV tuner. No price or launch date yet, but refreshingly different nonetheless.

Matt Damon is People’s Sexiest Man Alive

Matt Damon takes the top honor in People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2007. Here’s what People had to say about the sexiest man alive:

George Clooney and Brad Pitt have shamelessly campaigned for him since 2001, but this year’s winner was Bourne to the title. “You’ve given an aging suburban dad the ego-boost of a lifetime,” Damon, 32, explained why he couldn’t possibly accept the crown – which perfectly demonstrates many of the reasons we chose him in the first place: irresistible sense of humor, rock solid family man, heart-melting humility.”

Who else made the list? Ryan Reynolds, James McAvoy, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Patrick Dempsey, Dave Annable, Will Smith, Shemar Moore, Ben Affleck, Adrian Grenier, Will Yun Lee and Justin Timberlake.

The Women’s Club ... getting its finishing touches.

Join the Club

Tadmur builds a modern club for women at Sport City-Qatar

Tadmur Contracting and Trading Establishment was racing ahead to ensure the timely completion of the Doha Women’s Club by the end of August.

The QR90 million ($24.7 million) facility is specially designed to meet the recreational needs of the Qatari women and includes all indoor and outdoors sports facilities that could be expected of a modern club. It includes a health spa, business centre, library, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, squash courts, hair-dresser and beauty parlour and restaurant and café.
The building features an expansive glazed façade and a space frame supporting a curvilinear roof comprising aluminium cladding panels.
Tadmur is currently engaged in the finishing works on the project, which include the erection of the suspended ceilings and commissioning of the electro-mechanical works.
“The main challenge we faced was the time constraints in executing this project,” says a spokesman for Tadmur.
Among the key aspects of the Tadmur contract was the design and construction of the club’s swimming pool and spas and plunge pool building.
“Sport City-Qatar is a state-of-the-art sports complex and we are using a high standard of workmanship and materials while ensuring that the project is completed by the end of August,” says Ghaith Alqudah, division manager of Tadmur Swimming Pool and Spas Division.
Tadmur started work on the clubhouse in July 2005.
“We have designed and built the indoor, outdoor (main) and children’s swimming pools, the entrance and rear fountains, plunge pool and portable spa within the club. Due to our vast experience in the field, we successfully tackled the challenge of the intricate designing involved in the swimming pools and tiles and special filtration and heating systems for the swimming pool, jacuzzi, spas and plunge pools,” he adds.
As a well-diversified multidisciplinary company with interests in contracting, trading and service activities, Tadmur deals in the supply of building materials, such as cables and accessories, waterproofing materials, fibreglass insulation, timber, plywood, asbestos sheets, tiles, water heaters, oils and lubricants, copper pipes and fittings, kitchen and sanitary ware; foodstuff and consumables; as well as civil, waterproofing, mechanical and electrical contracting.

Pope and Saudi king hold historic meeting..!!!

Pope Benedict XVI, right, greeting King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at the Vatican on Tuesday.

Pope Benedict XVI and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia clasped hands at the Vatican on Tuesday in a cordial meeting, the first meeting ever between a pope and the Saudi monarch, who is entrusted to protect Mecca, the birthplace of Muhammad and center of the Islamic world.

The pair met for half an hour, speaking through interpreters, in a conversation that a Vatican press release later said had covered such themes as the "value of collaboration between Christians, Muslims and Jews for promoting peace" and "the necessity of finding a just solution" of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A SIMPLE IDEA TO PREVENT OF PLANET FROM GOING DRY

This maybe just a detail, but we love it !!! The message is clear, unless you're blind !!! Created by Saatchi & Saatchi for WWF.

"To make people realize that saving the planet starts with them saving paper, we took a standard paper dispenser and made a simple modification with green foil and the silhouette of South America. This allowed us to prove that the survival of the forest is directly connected to what people consume."

I know some people who already went beyond expectations in order to "save our planet" by simply not washing their hands, it saves water, it saves paper ... you'll thank them later ;-)

In The Memory: Yasser Arafat - The Nobel Peace Prize 1994

Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini
was born on 24 August 1929 in Cairo**, his father a textile merchant who was a Palestinian with some Egyptian ancestry, his mother from an old Palestinian family in Jerusalem. She died when Yasir, as he was called, was five years old, and he was sent to live with his maternal uncle in Jerusalem, the capital of the British Mandate of Palestine. He has revealed little about his childhood, but one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers breaking into his uncle's house after midnight, beating members of the family and smashing furniture. After four years in Jerusalem, his father brought him back to Cairo, where an older sister took care of him and his siblings. Arafat never mentions his father, who was not close to his children. Arafat did not attend his father's funeral in 1952. In Cairo, before he was seventeen Arafat was smuggling arms to Palestine to be used against the British and the Jews. At nineteen, during the war between the Jews and the Arab states, Arafat left his studies at the University of Faud I (later Cairo University) to fight against the Jews in the Gaza area. The defeat of the Arabs and the establishment of the state of Israel left him in such despair that he applied for a visa to study at the University of Texas. Recovering his spirits and retaining his dream of an independent Palestinian homeland, he returned to Faud University to major in engineering but spent most of his time as leader of the Palestinian students. He did manage to get his degree in 1956, worked briefly in Egypt, then resettled in Kuwait, first being employed in the department of public works, next successfully running his own contracting firm. He spent all his spare time in political activities, to which he contributed most of the profits. In 1958 he and his friends founded Al-Fatah, an underground network of secret cells, which in 1959 began to publish a magazine advocating armed struggle against Israel. At the end of 1964 Arafat left Kuwait to become a full-time revolutionary, organising Fatah raids into Israel from Jordan. It was also in 1964 that the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) was established, under the sponsorship of the Arab League, bringing together a number of groups all working to free Palestine for the Palestinians. The Arab states favoured a more conciliatory policy than Fatah's, but after their defeat by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War, Fatah emerged from the underground as the most powerful and best organised of the groups making up the PLO, took over that organisation in 1969 when Arafat became the chairman of the PLO executive committee. The PLO was no longer to be something of a puppet organisation of the Arab states, wanting to keep the Palestinians quiet, but an independent nationalist organisation, based in Jordan. Arafat developed the PLO into a state within the state of Jordan with its own military forces. King Hussein of Jordan, disturbed by its guerrilla attacks on Israel and other violent methods, eventually expelled the PLO from his country. Arafat sought to build a similar organisation in Lebanon, but this time was driven out by an Israeli military invasion. He kept the organization alive, however, by moving its headquarters to Tunis. He was a survivor himself, escaping death in an airplane crash, surviving any assassination attempts by Israeli intelligence agencies, and recovering from a serious stroke. His life was one of constant travel, moving from country to country to promote the Palestinian cause, always keeping his movements secret, as he did any details about his private life. Even his marriage to Suha Tawil, a Palestinian half his age, was kept secret for some fifteen months. She had already begun significant humanitarian activities at home, especially for disabled children, but the prominent part she took in the public events in Oslo was a surprise for many Arafat-watchers. Since then, their daughter, Zahwa, named after Arafat's mother, has been born. The period after the expulsion from Lebanon was a low time for Arafat and the PLO. Then the intifada (shaking) protest movement strengthened Arafat by directing world attention to the difficult plight of the Palestinians. In 1988 came a change of policy. In a speech at a special United Nations session held in Geneva, Switzerland, Arafat declared that the PLO renounced terrorism and supported "the right of all parties concerned in the Middle East conflict to live in peace and security, including the state of Palestine, Israel and other neighbours". The prospects for a peace agreement with Israel now brightened. After a setback when the PLO supported Iraq in the Persian Gulf War of 1991, the peace process began in earnest, leading to the Oslo Accords of 1993. This agreement included provision for the Palestinian elections which took place in early 1996, and Arafat was elected President of the Palestine Authority. Like other Arab regimes in the area, however, Arafat's governing style tended to be more dictatorial than democratic. When the right-wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu came to power in Israel in 1996, the peace process slowed down considerably. Much depends upon the nature of the new Israeli government, which will result from the elections to be held in 1999.

Yasser Arafat died on November 11, 2004.
and after a few days its gonna be The 3rd Anniversary of Palestinian Authority Chairman "Yasser Arafat".... In The Memory....to the End.

Sony Ericsson Pre-Christmas Cellphone Lineup Leaked?

Those crazy cats at Cellpassion are quite confidently picking November 6th as a proposed launch date for three new Sony Ericsson cellphones. Cellphonepassion has managed to get a few pics together, they are not great quality, but it offers a feel of what may be coming:

Apparently the handsets will include the W890i, which will be a 3G Walkman branded cellphone, have a 3.2MP camera, an accelerometer for gesture based controls and a refresh to Sony's Walkman media player software. The second phone in the supposed list will be the W380i, a lower end Walkman phone also toting gesture based controls. Finally, the last model, (which has been officially unveiled, but not launched), shall go by the K660i moniker and is designed specifically for Internet browsing. The launch details could all quite possibly be rhubarb, but we shall keep you posted on any developments. [Sony Ericsson, Cellpassion via BGR]
