The Qatari government is actively encouraging diversification by creating an economy based on non-reliance on oil and gas. This diversification is creating vast opportunities in the hospitality sector and is stimulating construction of luxurious, up-market hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities. The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is actively working towards establishing Qatar as one of the world’s quality destinations for leisure, business, education and sport. With events such as the G77 + China Conference in June 2006 and Doha Asian Games scheduled in December 2006, Qatar’s position is elevated in the global arena. Qatar’s $15 billion master plan focuses on the creation of new hotels and tourist attractions, and it is designed to develop a tourism base that will double the number of tourists from 700,000 to 1.4 million by 2010. |
